Personality}
Madoka is, essentially, a fairly normal girl who used to live a regular, happy lifestyle along with her family and her little circle of friends. Plain is another word for her, as she appears to have no special skills or outstanding flaws that define her personality, although one can say that she's either a genuinely gentle girl who never lies, and always treats people with respect, or that she's especially weak willed and easy to burst in tears when it comes to situations that she can't handle even minimally. However, as the story goes and the plot makes it so she's exposed to dangerous and emotionally wrecking situations, her character developes dramatically, to the point where she's absolutely willing to sacrifice her whole existence in order to save the world.
She is a good natured girl who tries her best to never hold grudges or judge people negatively, not even when facts are being slammed against her face, preferring to keep them as friends, like in the case of Kyouko - even after she witnessed the fight to the death between Kyouko and her best friend Sayaka. There are a few instances when Madoka's lack of judgement is shown, but what stands out the most is the fact that she would keep talking with Kyuubey even when she learns about the Soul Gems and how a Puella Magi's soul is trapped in them, meaning that he held this truth from them for about half of the canon story, even if it's a real big deal - especially when Madoka stupidly threw Sayaka's gem far away thinking that it would have saved her, and risked to have her friend killed instead. If she knew about that important detail, she would have never done such a thing. Despite that, she doesn't seem to display any resentment towards Kyuubey next time they talk, right before Sayaka turns into a Witch. It's only after that event that she has the courage to yell at him for the first time ever.
Because she's kind to pretty much everyone, and won't judge people easily, Madoka can be really naive, too, as shown from the very beginning when she saves Kyuubey from Homura's attack. She doesn't realize the gravity of a situation until she's shown the ugly side of it, and even then, she shows denial for a while before she gives up and eventually accepts it. Before episode 3, she was very eager to follow Mami around, admiring the girl for being a strong magical girl, and thinking that as long as Mami is there protecting them, nothing can ever go wrong. We reach the end of the episode, and Madoka is left wide-eyed and utterly shocked as the girl she admired was being killed and eaten by a Witch. She comes to face that reality only next morning while eating breakfast, muttering in tears that she's thankful that she's still alive and can still taste dad's delicious food.
A stronger case may be in one of the doomed timelines, in which Mami survives and Madoka does become a Puella Magi, and fights together with the other magical girls in order to bring justice. She was happy and hopeful that things could stay the way they were as long as they were united... until things go downhill from there, and her comrades die one by one in front of her eyes. From there she accepts the reality that being a magical girl means to suffer an inevitable fate. While she's naive and guillible, she's not stupid. She knows when it's time to learn from her mistakes.
Madoka also strongly believes in friendship. While it's partly fed with her naivety, she's very firm when it comes to bringing people together, even if they have their serious differences. She begs Homura to look after Sayaka when the latter one became a Puella Magi, and even tells Sayaka herself not to hate Kyouko despite the fact she was nearly killed in that fight. In the past timeline mentioned above, she was plenty successful on that matter, making her a good leader and a rightful example for the rest of the team.
As plain as she appears to be, the normal girl Madoka has thus a very low self-esteem, which leads to her crying outbursts during serious situations where she's incapable to give any help- and puts her in the position to actually desire being a magical girl in order to protect people. Kyuubey takes advantage of this fatal flaw many times, pushing her time and time again to contract with him, and it's clear that without Homura's interventions, Madoka would have become a Puella Magi anytime the chance appeared to her. That's demonstrated from the fact that Homura failed preventing the process many times over the course of her time travelling before the current timeline.
As a Puella Magi, however, Madoka is a completely different person. She's more confident in her skills, fights with bravery and is capable to defeat stronger Witches the more experienced she is. When in reality her magic strength stems from the fact that each time reset caused by Homura fills Madoka with more magic power, it's still impressive how she can effectively get things done when she's not impaired by her own insecurities. Being able to protect people and help whoever is in need, no matter which circumstance, is what strengthens her will, and what eventually leads to her greatest wish in the final part of the story.
To sum it up, Madoka is actually a strong and reliable girl with a big heart of gold, who would do anything to protect the people she cares about. Anything, even erase her whole existence from every universe."If someone told me that it's wrong to have hope, I would tell them that they're wrong. I would keep saying that forever, as many times as it takes."
Abilities}
Madoka is a Puella Magi. Basically, she can transform into a classic magical girl and gain power from the Soul Gem in order to fight Witches, thanks to a contract she made with the Incubator. In canon, she owns a magical bow that she can summon with magic, and it fires pink arrows of energy. The amount of ammo and how powerful her shots are depend on how much magic she possesses. She can run at higher speed, leap at considerably long distances, and have a more resistant body which can heal faster than normal.
The Soul Gem is a talisman in which her soul is trapped in. Kyuubey rips the soul from the girl's body and turns it into an object, so that her body can be damaged beyond any limit and yet she can still survive. It still prevents any Puella Magi's body to age with years. The gem can be corrupted if it won't be purified with Grief Seeds, which are obtained through defeating Witches. Failing the task, and giving into despair, would turn the girl into a Witch.
However, Madoka is somehow above that rule. It has been said multiple times, over the course of the canon, that Madoka is the strongest Puella Magi ever created. This is all thanks to not only her wish - aka erasing the Witches for good - but Homura's multiple time rewinding as well: since the power of a Puella Magi depends not only on the wish she expresses, but also on her fate, the fact that Homura tried to change the course of events and, consequently, connect with Madoka as much as she could, caused the threads of fate to feed her with power, and grow until she can be capable to wipe the most powerful Witch off the face of Earth with just a shot of her bow. Since she basically kills her own witch form, she went as far as to create a real time paradox, basically erasing herself from all sorts of earthly and universal existence.
Therefore, Madoka becomes insanely powerful by the end of her canon. At the cost of her own existence, she trascends time and space, rewriting the laws and history of each universe and timeline with her own efforts, and giving each corrupted Puella Magi from then on a peaceful death instead of letting them become Witches- by stealing all their despair away. She would be able to teleport everywhere and anywhere she wants, without any limit, as she basically became a true God, other than the embodiment of Hope.
But instead of what just mentioned, the whole trascendental process won't happen in her canon point. Madoka will enter this game's world when she's just a few seconds about to shoot the arrow that kills her own Witch form, preventing any sort of time paradox and therefore she won't become a God whose existence will be erased. Even so, she still remains a rather powerful Puella Magi, even though the limitations of the game will be in place, meaning that prana consumption and other mechanics will cap her powers considerably, although she's still capable to have basic Puella Magi abilities that are top tier in her category.
